Council puts $75,000 into a county program that helps pay household bills.
Starting in fiscal year 2027, the City gives Buncombe County $75,000 for its General Assistance Program, and the County adds $290,000. A household can get up to $500 and choose the bill it goes to, such as housing or utility costs. The City's share is only for people who live in the city.
- Passed with the routine items, in one vote, without discussion.
What this changes: It replaces an older County program for homeowners with low and moderate incomes. The City and County paid for that one from fiscal year 2023 to 2026. The new program helps residents who earn up to twice the federal poverty level.
